3D Printing Project: Demon Fella
Demon Fella
For this project, me and a partner choose a few objects from the 6 concepts we developed a week ago. We then decide on which ones will combine into one the best, and create a hybrid of our different ideas.
Out of his shapes, we decided on this for a basis. Out of mine, we like the idea of this one the most
For mine, the top was not planar, sadly, so we didn't go with it for the base shape. Essentially we took the idea of stars and the basis of Kailyn's vase with horns, and combined those ideas.
We moved into the concept art stage, Kailyn taking over this part of the process. He drew lots of creepy cute creatures with ideas on its surface texture, shape, and how it would bend and squish. He gave me tons of ideas to work with when moving this into 3D!
With his concept art, I took on the process of making it 3D. I spent most of my time experimenting with different commands, and seeing which structures would be stable to begin with when thinking about the base of this creature and printing. Here are some ideas I went through:
There was also the issue of making it self-supporting, so I decided that giving it a simple, tapered base would give it a funky but easy to print look. I was also surprised the horns ended up looking okay to print.
Annnd, our finished fella.
I think me and Kailyn's ideas meshed together quite well. The tallness of his vase, and the horns are present in the final design, while my more cartoony creation is represented in its little face and weird shape. We worked really well together and I'm glad I had him as a partner. As for the function..
We agreed his function is either being adorable, or just 'being a fella' haha. I see its purpose as being a little figure someone might collect. I guess he could hold water- he is quite watertight. So he could also be a bizarre planter. Which sounds awesome, to be honest.
Can't believe this is my last project for this class! This semester has been awesome, and I've learned so much. Thanks Bryan!
