Mesh Mashup Refinement

Mesh Mashup Refinement

====ƪ(˘⌣˘)┐ ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ ┌(˘⌣˘)ʃ====

Here are the original projects I began with, made from tinkercad!

The main critique for my projects were that most were still budding ideas, and not fully fleshed out. I totally agreed with this. I was actually eager for a critique, to help me build ideas, since I work best creatively when I can bounce ideas off of someone. My group had tons of excellent ideas, all of which I wrote down. These two were the most favoured, since they had a lot of possible story/ability to develop into something cool. Suggestions were to push the hand lamp all the way, in either a horror direction or something fantastical. Also to change the name because 1. it didn't have a lightbulb, not quite the best lamp and 2. it didn't match the vibe essentially.

The toothy throne was favoured because we thought up an entire scene we could create around it, a throne room full of bones and creepy hands. From the critiques I mostly took their suggestion to push an idea all the way, to just run with it. Since my objects were simplistic it left lot of room for some creative refinements. I went with the handlamp to enhance and recreate.

Firstly I took it into mesh mixer to see how it would translate. I spent a long time adding and taking away things, until I decided to completely recreate this (but, with the hands still at center stage).

Once I saw this model on Thingaverse, I had a way different idea including the hands. Here is where I found them

note: I could not for the life of me figure out how to get rid of the green and purple. It is such an eyesore but lets pretend it's supposed to be there.

I'd say this creation embodies remix culture for the most part through juxtaposition. I took the Venus DeMilo sculpture, something highly romanticized and a symbol of beauty of grace, and cut the poor thing up. Took her head, legs, most of her chest cavity away, and filled it with generally unpleasant things. The hands are veiny and weird, and clawing at this husk of beauty all weird like. It's not quite a slap in the face of contrast, but as you look on  it it just gets strange. With this I mashed together several ideas and symbols, some with contrasting differences. Like mushrooms- generally a symbol of rot and decay, sitting where you'd expect a heart to be. Or, as mentioned before, poor Venus carved out with only creepy hands to keep her company. I'm sure if whoever made this sculpture so long ago wouldn't really appreciate my remix that much. The mash up of new ideas tells a brand new story, one of blatant imperfections rather then the perfection of the original pieces.

Remix culture for the most part is combining two or more things to make something new, or re-ordering one thing so it says something different. This project does just the same, taking multiple separate objects with different meanings and combining them to create an entirely new narrative.
